Sensory input can be a effective tool for conditioning and controlling a slave. When a slave is allowed to enjoy or read for purely entertainment that is an earned privilege which can provide positive lessons to the slave. Back in the 80's, this slave was owned by a MASTER who strictly controlled this slave's sensory input. MASTER felt that this was necessary in order to ensure that slave was focussed on its slavery and not being distracted by friviolous ideas and entertainment. As well MASTER felt that any sensory input should reinforce its training and conditioning. Therefore after surrendering to MASTER, during its initial training this slave was not allowed to watch TV, listen to music or radio or read. During trainng it was required to kneel in front of a mirror and recite a slave mantra, which was recorded and played back to it through a Walkman and headphones. After this slave had completed its initial training, it was allowed to read BDSM fiction, mostly the Gor books, but whatever gay porn ws available. There were strict parameters on what this slave was allowed to read. The fiction must depict slavery in a positive light, the slave portrayed, must never be released or to be seen to be successfully rebellious. The slave must love being owned and totally surrendered. Eventually it was allowed to watch the news and other mainstream entertainment. but TV was a privilege that was conditional on slave's behaviouor and atitude. This slave can say that MASTER'S control of its sensory input was very effective in keeping the proper mind-set entrenched and constantly reinforced. When this slave was first released, it found that the information it suddenly had access to, very overwhelming which added to the constant yearning for control that it felt until it was re-enslaved 8 months later. A collateral benefit, when this slave was re-enslaved, it eagerly embraced the control MISTRESS exercised over it. As well, its new OWNER adopted many of its previous MASTER'S practices so there was a high degree of continuity. So my boy is pretty much inundated with music frequently whether he likes it or not. (grin) He can listen to any music in my presence that I don't dislike, which means pretty much anything except rap and industrial and cool jazz. So he's got the opposite problem: although he has no musical aptitude, he is singing with me in my church choir, and occasionally taking stabs at learning to play the violin. He is learning to sight-read music, and some music theory. Learning is very important to me - since he's been with me he's had to study Old Norse, runes, history, monasticism, acupuncture, etc. This September he goes back to school for a year-long massage therapy certification, and this March he goes off to beekeeping school. I mean, when you can have someone learn anything you want, why not custom-train them? As for books...I have an enormous library. I love books, and never have enough room for them, as I'm always getting more. However, we don't have a lot of money, so he is allowed to buy a small number of books on subjects I approve of every now and then. Aside from that, he uses the public library (and the inter-library loan system) on a weekly basis. I often have him do research for me on various subjects. In fact, as a writer, I find that research assistant is a great skill for him to have. I can't imagine restricting his reading of certain subjects because I'm against censorship in general, and I have no worries that anything he reads will affect him badly. He's too cynical for that. However, he doesn't get to watch TV very much. He has a bad habit of walking by our housemates watching TV, seeing the screen, and getting hypnotized and sucked in by Buffy or Charmed or whatever other nonsense is on instead of finishing his errand. He can watch when I watch (which is rarely) and occasionally with a friend. So my response here is for the benefit of others who might be reading and not realize that what she's saying is untrue. Being a slave means you only have what your master chooses to give you. I think it was our very own Carolyn here who said, "Some people believe that because a slave gives up everything, they are necessarily deprived of everything -- this is not true." So while it's true that you have no guaranteed right to read, listen to music or anything else, that doesn't mean doing any of those things makes you not a "real" slave. A slave is allowed to do what their master determines they're allowed to do, and on this thread a lot of slaves have shared how their masters or mistresses feel they're improved in value and enjoyment by being encouraged to read or listen to music. As a slave you belong to Him, you are His property, He will or won't let you do anything he wants and there is nothing you can do for it after you accept to become His slave. Of course, with a contract or verbally you can, or better you should describe your limits at the beginning in consensual slavery, but i don't think a limitation about listening music or reading books would be a part of it.
