Phone barcode scanner apps (10)

jouva's TSR scanner app for Android has prompted me to have another look at TSR barcode scanning for iPhones. We used to be able to use RedLaser, but the facility to direct queries to a particular website was removed when RedLaser was bought by eBay.

However, I've identified pic2shop as a free iPhone app which can be made to work with TSR. So now, if you look at the Lookup page on TSR (there's a link in the left hand column of every page too) with an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad there's a link near the bottom which takes you to the app if you have it installed. This link tells the app to come back to TSR with the result of the scan. (There's a link to the app on iTunes to make it easier to install.)

I have noticed that it might take two attempts to get pic2shop to scan a barcode correctly off a computer screen, but it's better with printed barcodes. I'd appreciate any feedback from other people scanning printed barcodes.

Also, if anyone with access to an Android phone would like to test it with the link on this page and tell me whether it works, that would be appreciated too.

From testing both Shopsavvy and pic2shop on an Android Samsung S2 they both seem to work equally well on SLRN codes although pic2shop scans and produces the result a little faster.

Hope that helps

Thanks: so when you view this page with your phone's browser, and follow the link in the first post, does it successfully bring you back to the corresponding profile page on TSR?

The 'lookup' link brings the phone to the search names and numbers page. The 'this page' link brings the phone to the 'reading barcodes with apps' page. I'm not sure that's what you're asking though.

Thanks, so when you click on the pic2shop link on the 'reading barcodes with apps' page on your Android phone, does it bring up the pic2shop app?

If it does, when you scan an SLRN barcode with the app, does it bring up your web browser again with the profile page corresponding to the barcode being shown in the browser?

(It will only do this if you start pic2shop by following the link onthe 'reading barcodes with apps' page.)

The pic2shop link brings up the pic2shop app no problem but neither Shopsavvy or pic2shop will bring up a profile or ownership certificate [only the barcode number].

QR codes however are much more successful as I imagine going through the mobiles browser doesn't rely on the apps database, however only the ownership certificate is shown on the mobiles screen.

Thanks. The link to start the pic2shop app on the barcodeapps page includes extra information which tells pic2shop (and only pic2shop, it won't work with Shopsavvy etc) to come straight back to TSR with whatever number it's got from the scan, and TSR shows you the corresponding profile page. This is working with pic2shop on iPhones already, but it sounds as if there is something different about the Android version of pic2shop.

Even the TSR scanner app brings you to the ownership certificate with an Android phone.

The TSR Barcode app lands on the certificate page because the TOS of both the Android and apple markets do not allow adult type content (IE Photos) otherwise this site would have to be devided into 2 type of sites, thats why there is a web link on the app.

We do plan on a apple app in the future but as the cost to just put the app on apples market is quite high compared to the one time fee that android charges and the other limits apple has imposed give us some time.

Thank you for your input. I had considered whether this was the case but have not had a chance to to read the Android TOS. You appear to have saved me the trouble.
