Good day all.

I was writing to try to get some advice on metal collars. I collared my love with a chain and heart shaped lock several months ago. I never let her out of this collar for months. The chain was shiny from a sub-shop. It was meant to be worn around the neck.

Anyway, recently, she developed a rash on her neck in ONE spot. We thought that maybe poison ivy got on this chain and was in need of a good cleaning. Now, even after just ONE day, little bumps can be found. Darn! We both are pretty upset about this.

I did buy another collar off ebay for $30 This one metal (flat) collar. I also bought a ring one that I had to return for other reasons. Again, the reaction to skin started to develop. We are both kinda upset about this. She really feels lost without it. She too would wake up holding her collar.

So... Do I need to only buy surgical stainless steel? I love the metal rings with the o-ring on it. Something that "might" pass as real jewerly.

Thanks for any advice. As far as "Heavy Metal" goes... I just wanted an interesting topic. Thanks for reading.

Your love may have a metal allergy. My step-child has a metal allergy. She did have a reaction to stainless steel. All of the step-kid's jewelry is made of precious metal like gold, silver, or platinum. If the jewelry is just coated in a precious metal, she had the problem with it wearing off and exposing the metal she has an allergy too. (It's possible that the chain, you purchased your slave was coated in a metal she was not allergic to but through normal wear and tear it exposed the underlying metal which she is allergic too.)

I would recommend getting an allergy test to see what metals she is allergic to, if you have insurance because the test is rather expensive. If that isn't an option, buying or borrowing small pieces of jewelry made of different metals to see if she has a reaction to may be helpful and a less expensive route.

Best wishes,

slave emma

i developed a metal allergy after a couple of years. The most common metal that bothers people is nickel. You might look for a collar the has no metal alloys that contain nickel. i used to use clear nail polish to cover the metal next to my skin, but it wears off fast. A leather or cloth liner would probably work to keep the metal from making contact with her. Just glue it along the inside or make little ties to keep it in place around the metal.

I have the same problem, and even started a thread on it as well (if you are interested use the search mechanism to find it).

Anyway, what I learned from my experience is that you have to experiment, be patient and try things out to see what works.

In the end, I coated the metal bits of my collar with a varnish like substance so I could wear it. I also do not wear it 24/7, I take it off at night to give my skin a rest.

There are some pretty neat collars at Wyred Slave that have a PVC coating on them that might work.

I had this exact same problem with a slave once. She wore a thick steel collar. I replaced it with stainless steel and sadly that was no better. I wasn't sure if it was metal allergy or trapped sweat or just the rubbing. The answer is to spray the metal with a sealant. You can get sealants designed to stop corrosion but they are stable and don't rub off. The steel still looks like steel though not quite as bright.

Thanks for all the advice.

I was hoping someone would say the more expensive the metal, the better chance of it NOT causing a rash.

I'll have to look further at PVC coated and coatings in general. Maybe I'll research defferent metals and their respective chance of reactions.

As for her being able to take it off at night... This will not do. We feel she won't have the "owned" feeling without me posessing the key to her collar.

Definitely a metal allergy. Good news, you know what it is and this can be fixed. I agree with what others have posted but would like to add one more thought. I would find one you really like and get it in the best metal possible. If you keep trying things that don't work, I believe you will make her more hypersensitive. Try for the best first, and if that doesn't work call it a day and move to pvc. Just my opinion.

After doing some research... I did confirm what has happened. I did find that others have worn the "plating" off of jewerly only to find the metal underneath to be a problem. I knew I couldn't be alone with this problem.

We do want a more permanant collar. Since she will be wearing it all the time, why not make it nice? I want people to see it to know that I have my love wearing something nice. As you stated, she will have a better self image with a nice collar. (Google: Eight Cow Wife)

Thanks for all of the comments. I'm sure she will be on here with something to say soon. Hope my love will have good things to say about the new collar that will be here soon.

Hello

You are not the only person to be allergic to metal and spend their teens painting jewellery with clear nail varnish to be able to wear it for a short while. I'm so bad I can react to even handling some metals... let alone trying to wear them long-term :)

As other people have already mentioned... I've had trouble with stainless steel too, and even the collars we bought made of leather had rivets made of metal that even when putting plasters over them set off my allergies.

I also had a silver collar bought for me as my first permanent collar but the metal of the screws in that set it off too, so M decided to stop buying them and make his own instead... and this is how Wyred Slave started.

This next bit isn't - I promise - an ad for our company... it's really to help explain what people with allergies can use, because most our ranges can be worn by people with allergies, and it's what we're known for.

We have found the material we make our locks from - aluminium - has not caused allergic reactions in any of our customers. So much so that we designed a slave tag made completely from the same material, with the mounts made from aluminium too.

So I'd happily say aluminium is something to look out for as being able to be worn by allergy sufferers.

Having sold literally hundreds of collars/cuffs I'm also happy to say the metal rope we use to make them from is safe too... and this is a marine grade stainless steel (the same stuff they use for piercing jewellery).... not a cheaper galvanized steel, so it's worth asking if the product you're interested in is made from that.

Someone else has mentioned PVC-coated steel, and yes we have a range using that, but again that's a industrial-grade material which is far more expensive than regular coatings, so won't crack or wear away easily. I would suggest if you're going to buy something like that you make sure the pvc coating is thick enough to not wear away over time, exposing the metal underneath, which could possibly cause a reaction.

Having also had reactions myself from screws/fixings in previous collars I'd recommend buying something with a recessed screw that doesn't come into contact with the skin at all.

Someone else has mentioned shiny O-rings, but these do tend to be chrome or nickel plated, so I really would suggest not going near one of those. This doesn't mean you won't be able to have a silver ring though... just go for a powder-coated version instead.

I'm going to stop now before you end up with a book-sized waffle about metal, but hope this helps a bit :)

And finally... wherever you go... I really do hope you find what you're looking for :)

Take care

Lorii

That sucks i am sorry. i know from being around the medical field that for people that have metal reactions often time the only acceptable metal option is surgical steel. i believe you are on the right path. If that doesn't work maybe a nice leather collar would work. Good luck.

My pet is allergic to nickel, but luckily she is able to wear 316L stainless, so she has a collar and cuffs from Ring of Steel (now on her third year in that collar). Also, all of her piercing jewelery is pure titanium.

The best stuff I have found for coating jewelery that causes a reaction is a self-catalyzing polyurethane that fly rod builders use to seal thread windings. It's extremely tough, and even something like a padlock hasp that gets a LOT of wear will last up to a week or two. Here's a link to where I used to get it from (before I replaced all of her metal with non-reactive metals).
