I dont know if it has been discussed somewhere else but it would be a nice thing to have a list of all the acronyms used in the discussions and the site. Like other people (I guess) that have english not as their native language, on several occasions I find it difficult to understand what people are saying when too many acronyms are used.

I took this decission to ask such a think when in a recent post I saw the following

I could not follow what this member wanted to say by WIITWD. So I think people using all these acronyms either write in plain english or lets try to create a list of acronyms. In case there allready is one it would be nice if soemone would point to it.

WIITWD ? WTF? I have never come across that initialism before. Maybe its in the FAQ. (soft sarcasm)

I would be interested to know what it means.

Incidentally, an acronym is a pronouncable word, such as NATO or radar, whereas WTF, FBI etc that you can't actually pronounce are initialisms. I'm sure you all needed to know that LOL!

thx alot you all... :-)

And sorry for not knowing the exact meaning of "acronym" in english. Being greek (and that being a greek word to start with) I thought it would have the same meaning as in greek. Namely a word comprised of the first letter of words regardless if it is pronouncable or not.

I guess then R.T.F.M. is not an acronym either right? :-)

Whilst Hawklord is right about the *correct* use of the word ancronym, I'm sure he'll concede that the more *common* use of is as you decribe it.

http://www.gaarde.org/acronyms/ has a very in-depth list of acronyms, abbreviations, and other Internet memes.

Edited to add: my favorite has always been PEBKAC which stands for "Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair". :-)
