Could you pass an obedience test? (33)

This post is on the M/s D/s O&P web board.

Many slaves on TSR, myself included, have said that obedience is their sole duty to their Master.

Yet, there are probably as many definitions and/or interpretations of obedience as there are slaves due to the needs and requirements within individual M/s dynamics. I would also venture to guess that there are just as many ways to measure obedience within individual dynamics as well. I make this observation based on a recent discussion I had with several slave friends. While we could agree in general terms on a definition of obedience, we did not agree (and quite heatedly so) on specifics. When the discussion ventured toward how to measure or test obedience we again found there was broad disagreement, but we were able to agree generally to the following measurement/test. It was discovered that we were all on a continuum of obedience and that being obedient was not as cut and dried as we first anticipated.

For those that might be interested in the discussion, I have provided our "obedience test" below. How does your understanding of obedience fit with the following "test"? Which question(s) give you the most trouble? Why? Are there times when there are exceptions?

FIRST TEST: Do you ask for reasons when your request is turned down?

SECOND TEST: Do you stop what you are doing when given instructions? THIRD TEST: Do you smile when you are told to do something?

FOURTH TEST: Do you ever give reasons why you cannot do a job?

FIFTH TEST: Have you ever had to be reminded to do little tasks?

SIXTH TEST: Do you ever have to re-do a job you did the wrong way?

SEVENTH TEST: Do you ever think that a job is "stupid?"

EIGHTH TEST: Do you ever seek another "authority" after your Master said, "No?"

NINTH TEST: Do you ever plan another activity while finishing your tasks?

TENTH TEST: Do you obey whatever you are told to do?

Our group agreed that there were no right or wrong answers to any of the questions as they would be highly dependent on the individual dynamics. We, therefore, tasked each other to discuss our "findings" with our Masters.

what a great idea!

1st... No, I don't ask for reasons... I know that he has a reason for saying no and generally he will explain why anyway.  I might be disappointed but I accept it.

2nd... Yes, whatever I am doing at the moment will have to wait, when Master wants something he wants it now.

3rd... I would like to say yes...lol...but not always, it doesn't matter to him if I'm smiling or not as long as I do as I'm told.... Actually he sometimes enjoys the fact that I may not be having a good time but I do it anyway.

4th... If for some reason I cannot do something I absolutely tell him immediately and why, he knows I would not refuse to just avoid it but rather there is a good reason... Ex. kids are expected and he has forgotten the time.

5th... Yes, sometimes I am distracted or have been interrupted and he will gently remind me....once.

6th... I don't really recall ever having to do that.

7th... Oh there are a lot of things I think are stupid...lol...but when I give him that look he gives me a scowl ...or laughs and then says ...do it! ... And I do...sometimes he just likes to hear me grumble

8th... Absolutely not...there is no other authority.

9th... Not sure I understand this question...by planing do you mean think about other things? If so then yes.

10th... Yes... Exception...see # 4

Thank you pet, this was extremely interesting and really made me think! I think the 5th one gives me the most trouble, when I forget something it certainly isn't intentional and it upsets me that he has to remind me. Sometimes my short term memory isn't the best and if I get a phone call or the kids interupt me and I get pulled away before I am able to do what he's asked it slips away. It frustrates me, and I have to make notes for myself. I hate to say its age, but it wasn't a problem until the last few years...kinda like my eyesight :-p

Best Regards,

FIRST TEST: Do you ask for reasons when your request is turned down?

Yes, but I am always allowed to ask why as long as I'm not pouting or throwing a temper tantrum.

SECOND TEST: Do you stop what you are doing when given instructions?

Yes. THIRD TEST: Do you smile when you are told to do something

Not always. But whether I smile or not has nothing to do with obedience.

FOURTH TEST: Do you ever give reasons why you cannot do a job?

Yes, when I was dealing with extreme social anxiety. We've worked through most of that and he was aware it wasn't deliberate disobedience.

FIFTH TEST: Have you ever had to be reminded to do little tasks?

No. My attention to detail is almost super human.

SIXTH TEST: Do you ever have to re-do a job you did the wrong way?

I've never done a job the wrong way.

SEVENTH TEST: Do you ever think that a job is "stupid?"

Yes, but that doesn't mean I don't listen and do what I'm supposed to.

EIGHTH TEST: Do you ever seek another "authority" after your Master said, "No?"

No. That's not even logical to do in this lifestyle.

NINTH TEST: Do you ever plan another activity while finishing your tasks?

Like an activity of my own doing or planning how to complete another task assigned?

TENTH TEST: Do you obey whatever you are told to do?

Now days, yes. It took a lot of work on his part to get me to that point. I've never deliberately disobeyed, but we spent a lot of time working on my social and emotional issues that kept me from fully trusting him.

FOURTH TEST: Do you ever give reasons why you cannot do a job? (Yes, if it involves others, ie: kids being around etc)

FIFTH TEST: Have you ever had to be reminded to do little tasks? (No.)

SIXTH TEST: Do you ever have to re-do a job you did the wrong way? (Never)

SEVENTH TEST: Do you ever think that a job is "stupid?" (not really...sometimes pointless, but He has his reasons)

EIGHTH TEST: Do you ever seek another "authority" after your Master said, "No?" (What the hell would the point be of doing that??)

NINTH TEST: Do you ever plan another activity while finishing your tasks? (yes)

TENTH TEST: Do you obey whatever you are told to do? (Yes, actually I do, to the best of my ability)

#1 i honestly never ask for anything..

#2 omg yes..if He wants something i drop what ever i am doing and return to it later.

#3 i always smile at Him when i am told to do something even if it is getting naked out of the blue.

#4 No i always do as i am told..regardless i will find a way to get it done.

#5 No when He asks for something done i remember it, even if He doesn't

#6 Not at the moment but if He feels like i still don't understand He repeats how it should be done and i correct the way of doing it the next time.

#7 Never...because it is important to Him so i do it to make Him happy.

#8 i have asked Pet_Girl to explain things to me from her Mistress side but what ever He says goes...period

#9 Such as the next things i have to get done..yes everytime. i do my best to manage my time to accomplish the most i can

1. Not normally, because typically when I am asking for something it is outside the norm. If it isn't something I normally get I am not expecting to get it.

2. Sometimes, if I am in the middle of something that can't stop immediately. I will listen as a work on what I am doing. I will acknowledge that I heard him and as soon as I am at a stopping point I will get whatever he wants. (This happens more often when I am cooking something fancy.)

3. Not always, if I smiled every time my Master would probably think I am up to something. Smiling also doesn't reflect obedience, in my opinion. However, if I was had an attitude when I was doing a task it would probably result in me getting in trouble.

4. Yes, because sometimes life gets in the way.

5. Sometimes, my Master will check with me to verify certain things have been done. I do not know if that is so much as a reminder as just a status update on things.

6. No, I have never had to redo a task because it wasn't completed to his satisfaction. But I have redone things I wasn't satisfied with.

7. No, I do not think a job is stupid. I think everything has a purpose, even if that purpose is to teach patience.

8. No, I do not seek an authority outside of my Master. If I sought out another authority with a different opinion than him. He would view that as topping from the bottom.

9. Yes, my Master likes anticipatory service. Therefore, I will generally have at least a rough idea of what I am going to do next.

10. Generally yes, but during the beginning of our relationship we have run into times where I have disobeyed. It is something we talk about when it happens but if it was something that happened on a consistent basis it would lead to the end of the relationship.

Best wishes,

FIRST TEST: Do you ask for reasons when your request is turned down? No. i might if i REALLY was curious or felt it was very important.

SECOND TEST: Do you stop what you are doing when given instructions? ummm Not necessarily. Depends on the situation. i DO reduced the time in any case.

THIRD TEST: Do you smile when you are told to do something?

Hmmm so far.

FOURTH TEST: Do you ever give reasons why you cannot do a job? If i can't do it for some reason, yes i would say why.

FIFTH TEST: Have you ever had to be reminded to do little tasks? Yes. He has a saying we are supposed to say together twice a day an i always forget. He remembers...usually.

SIXTH TEST: Do you ever have to re-do a job you did the wrong way? No i am more meticulous than He is.

SEVENTH TEST: Do you ever think that a job is "stupid?" So far no, but i'm sure that will happen

EIGHTH TEST: Do you ever seek another "authority" after your Master said, "No?" No. if i don't agree or get it, we can discuss it, but there IS NO authority over His.

NINTH TEST: Do you ever plan another activity while finishing your tasks? Yes.Inquiring minds keep moving, but i think of all plans as tentative not planning as in it is GOING to happen.

TENTH TEST: Do you obey whatever you are told to do? Yes- again, so far. Once or twice it was a really bad idea and He saw that when i pointed it out.So far i have not had to refuse against His wishes due to a serious problem with it which would be a safety issue, not preference issue, Preferences don't count. (mine) i can speak them, but i don't expect them to be necessarily considered and they aren't always considered. That is fine.

FIRST TEST: Do you ask for reasons when your request is turned down? i cannot recall making a request. Certainly I would not expect an explanation for a refusal. Submission would not ask for reasons.

SECOND TEST: Do you stop what you are doing when given instructions? Of course! When my Owner is addressing me, He has my full attention. my full understanding of His orders is essential if i am to fulfil my role of obeying them.

THIRD TEST: Do you smile when you are told to do something? i make the anjali gesture and thank Him for His orders.

FOURTH TEST: Do you ever give reasons why you cannot do a job? Given that i have no outside distractions; such a situation has never arisen. Again, submission would not allow a refusal.

FIFTH TEST: Have you ever had to be reminded to do little tasks? Sometimes, early on when i was learning 'the ropes', but not now.

SIXTH TEST: Do you ever have to re-do a job you did the wrong way? In addition to the answer for question 5, occasionally if a task is new, i will have to repeat it until He is satisfied.

SEVENTH TEST: Do you ever think that a job is "stupid?" In the early days, sometimes, yes. Now, sufficient justification for doing anything He wants is that He does so.

EIGHTH TEST: Do you ever seek another "authority" after your Master said, "No?" For me there is no other authority.

NINTH TEST: Do you ever plan another activity while finishing your tasks? As i have a set framework of tasks to do, i will be thinking ahead of how best i can do them. i try my best to anticipate His needs, as well as making time so that any extra tasks He gives me to not upset His established routine.

TENTH TEST: Do you obey whatever you are told to do? In the early days, i would try to explain why i would rather not do so. Now, to do so would be going against my submission to Him.

FIRST TEST: Do you ask for reasons when your request is turned down? i try to be respectful and accepting, but i do still slip into expecting reasons. He tolerates it so i suppose until he gets annoyed with it, i will continue, though i am getting better.

SECOND TEST: Do you stop what you are doing when given instructions? It depends on the nature of the request and the sense of timing of what we are doing that day. If it is critical to what he is doing at the moment, then of course i drop everything and see to it. Otherwise i fit it into the natural flow of things already going on.(Okay, i just read that question a different way: i do stop and listen to the instructions rather than multi-tasking while he is speaking to me. Then i either resume what i was doing and fit his request in, or stop what i am doing and attend to his request, as stated in the first part of my answer.)

THIRD TEST: Do you smile when you are told to do something? That is actually an interesting question because the answer is multi-leveled. Deep inside, yes i smile. i love it when he gives me orders and clearly tells me to do something with firmness and authority-even something i don't want to do. On the surface i may make faces or resent the actual request, though most of the time i simply say "Yes, Sir" and do it with a willing and pleasant demeanor.

FOURTH TEST: Do you ever give reasons why you cannot do a job? If there are reasons why i cannot do the job, it is my obligation to let him know, so yes. Sometimes there are factors involved that he may not have considered or be unaware of that may change his desire for me to do that, and i will let him know. Sometimes he changes his request, and sometimes he wants it done anyway.

FIFTH TEST: Have you ever had to be reminded to do little tasks? Not usually, but once in a while i will get distracted (usually by him :-)) and have to be reminded. i really feel terrible when that happens, even if he isn't too bothered by it.

SIXTH TEST: Do you ever have to re-do a job you did the wrong way? So far, no. He has always been pleased with my efforts and outcomes.

SEVENTH TEST: Do you ever think that a job is "stupid?" Yes, upon occasion. It is hard for me to let go, still, of the idea that my opinions and perspective are the 'right' ones. But invariably it works out and i am getting much better about just accepting his way.

EIGHTH TEST: Do you ever seek another "authority" after your Master said, "No?" Absolutely not. There is no other authority than him - if there was he wouldn't be my master.

NINTH TEST: Do you ever plan another activity while finishing your tasks? i am always planning and working schedules and ideas in my very active mind while doing tasks - unless it is a very intense and difficult task that requires my undivided attention. It seems to be important to me to have some idea of the shape of the day and what comes next, so i do plan the next thing, usually. i do like my 'to do' lists.

TENTH TEST: Do you obey whatever you are told to do? So far yes - even in spite of how terribly and passionately i may not want to.

Very fun test. :-) i look forward to sharing it with my master. i wonder what he thinks of my obedience? In general i know he is very pleased with me, but this will be a fun way to explore it more deeply and specifically.
