I was in the very privilaged position of being offered training/ownership by a very experienced Master. However what it came down to was me giving up my pocessions, ie furniture, books, home (rented). I was very sincere in my desire to serve my Master then as best I could. However I just couldn't give up my worldly pocessions! It was a mixture of fears it wouldn't work out (would have had to move 100's of miles away, etc. I had considered storage as my Master had an already filled home.

Now there are many many times I sit alone with these so called pocessions and can't believe I give up such an opportunity.

Has anyone any guidance on such a matter please?

I think you had reasonable fears that any responsible adult should have. Personally, moving without any of my possessions for a complete stranger would unnerve me, but if it works for you, great. If this happens again where your choices are move with nothing and risk it all, or stay single, perhaps you should ask for a compromise. Storage until you're certain that it will last, or something.

Why do you have to give it all up? And why can't you at least keep a few select things you -need- ? Do you completely trust your Master and from the beginning was this an eventual requirement (moving away, getting rid of possessions)? Maybe you just need more time to think about it, talk to him and build up more trust first.

It's a big step.

Thankyou for your thoughts.

This happened to me a year or more ago. I will learn from this experience, understand why I reacted the way I did.

You are right it is about Trust, in both the Master and myself really to make the right decisions.

Again thankyou.

If it happened a long time ago, were you asking for future reference? Just in case it happens again?

Yes,this could been seen as a privilege. By what you have written, it may not have been the right time for you. Maybe not the right person or right type of dynamic.

You do not say how well you know/knew this Master. Were you involved already with him? If so, was it RL or OL? How well do you know each other? Are you compatible? The answers to these questions could give clues as to why you felt you could not move forward at this time.

Really, IMO, I would look at it not as "How to make that decision" but rather "Is making this move the right decision for me"?

This lifestyle can be wonderful but... real, everyday life is part of it. Everyone has responsibilities, family, career, financial decisions, etc. etc. to think about before making major life changing decisions. You have to know what you want, where you want to go and if the timing is right to do it. Nothing wrong with that.

You have had one opportunity, you will have more. Be patient, choose who is best for you. When the right Master for you comes along, you will know. You will know how to make that decision and that it is the right decision for you. ;)

All the best to you.

Regrets over a decision made... we've all had them at one time or another.

Then your negative inner voice kicks in... and you find yourself caught in sadness and self-attack over a choice you made in the past. "That was stupid... that was wrong... you really screwed that one up..." says that negative inner voice. "Look at the pain you caused yourself... look at what you lost..."

Sound familiar?

The thinking error that underlies regret is 20/20 hindsight.

Your mistake (wrong decision) can only be recognized as such with perfect awareness that comes from looking back. At the time of the choice, if you are completely honest about your hopes, fears, and how you saw things, you probably did the best you could. You chose what seemed reasonable at the time. Only in retrospect does the choice become wrong.

Here's some guidance...

Really look at what you did at the time of this decision - what you feared, what you expected, what you knew and didn't know, what you hoped for. Climb into your head as you made the decision, be the person you were then. Now explore the question: did you do the best you could with what you knew at the time and understood at the time?

Try to open up some emotional distance from this regret. This was a sad moment in your life, but it is in the past. Accept that you did the best you knew how to do, and accept the pain of what was lost. Take a breath and pull away, letting the moment take its place among all the events of your life - one of many.

Hope this helps.

I made the jump. Left my country and everything, I don't regret it in the least....that being said however, it was the right decision for ME. Sounds like you did what your gut was telling you to do. Even though I knew my Master prior to moving, I still had my 'safety net' in place..and it still is. Sometimes we do have to listen to our instincts sometimes they say go... sometimes they say "Whoa". As "Owned" said....the right Master and situation will come along...probably when you least expect it..that's the way it happened for me.
