Belly Dancing has been mentioned, nay, discussed on a thread about "Chained House Slaves" and I thought maybe start a dance thread here.

I've watched belly dances while in the Eastern Mediterranean but don't really know a great deal about them. Perhaps someone out there would like to enlighten me?

I have learnt Greek Dancing of course, in Cyprus. It is a male orientated dance-form in the beginning. Unlike others such as ballroom where male and female partners dance by common consent, the Greek Dance rather mimics the birds' mating ritual.

First the men dance together in front of the foregathered women. The second stage is where the women dance around the man of their choice and finally the two dance together. After that? Use your imagination! :-D

Morris is a traditional English dance form whose origins go back to fertility rituals among other things. My Lady Mistress is an ex-Morris dancer but still keeps in touch. Indeed last time I was with her in her home town she loaned her slave (me) to her old Morris team for a day! Interestingly enough they, the Morris team considered having a slave normal.

Anyway, I digress...

Any dancing input anyone?

I've been interested/involved in bellydance for several years. I used to attend thrice weekly classes, but haven't been involved in a troupe in a couple of years due to finances. There are few teachers in my area and they all want a minimum of $120 for 8 weeks, up front. It's more for private lessons, which is what I'd prefer to class lessons. Classes tend to focus on troupe performance, and I mostly want to dance just for me; I'm not really into the "performing" thing.

Anywho, because I can't get to classes, I'm relegated to videos and DVDs when I can get to them (not often, being a busy stay-at-home mom/college student). My troupe focused on Egyptian cabaret style, but I always did prefer tribal fusion. There is only one teacher who does tribal in my area. She was actually a classmate in my troupe before she broke off to start teaching. Master and I have discussed my retuning to lessons with her when finances allow.

Bellydance, despite the way Western civilization has sexuialized it, is a cultural dance which naturally varies by culture, used for rituals, celebrations, births, weddings, etc. It irks me somewhat that so many people automatically equate the dance with sex. The dance comes from so many cultures - all over the Middle East, India, even Israel. Each of those cultures has its own style, its own unique flavor for it.

This post has probably been edited for spelling/grammar because I'm weird like that.

I am wildly attracted to all things dance- the shape it makes a body take, the grace and control that a trained dancer exhibits, the feelings of art and creation, and the feeling that Dance is really some greater power that is flowing through you...

However, i'm not a dancer. As the name suggests, i'm usually the one laying down the groove to which everyone else is movin' :D

Case in point, at a party this past winter, I was on the sidelines watching the dancers and a girl remarked on how much fun it looked like the dancers were having. She asked why I wasn't out there too and I said, "Because I'm a terrible dancer." She said "well, now is you're chance to learn." At that point I thought, well, she really wants to dance with me. I might as well indulge her...so we went out. Thirty seconds later she says, "I think my friends are ready to leave. Sorry, Bye!" So there I am, standing on the dancefloor nodding slightly and thinking to myself, "I told you."

the greek dancing sounds so neat! i've never seen anything like it before but i am going to ask my Master if i can look it up to see a video! my Master and i have done contra dancing in the past. He doesn't dance too much, but likes to sit and watch me dance with other Masters while we're there ... its like line dancing, but very New England, USA. lots of big skirts and rambunctious music! i love it so much, we've not been there in a while and it makes me sad ... but hopefully we'll get to start up again soon.

He also is going to start letting me learn the Argentine tango! He works very late on Wednesday nights and knows i get scared being home alone ... so as long as i get everything done i can go over to my graduate school and take the lessons! I'm so excited about that too ... that dance is so beautiful.

oh sorry! rambling! i think dance is a great way for slaves to express themselves to their owners... and to release tension (in a way that's legal)

'What are you?' I inquired. 'A slave girl,' she said. 'What is your duty?' I asked. 'Absolute obedience,' she cried out."
