This may sound weird but ive been going thru something i'm not sure what to do about. i am a 24/7 slave to my Master and in many ways couldnt be happier, the only bad part is that i was injured at work last year and havent been able to return and i more than likely never will return to work. Master is fine with that, He likes me being home and taking care of Him and the house and all and personally i love being with him all the time.
Heres my delima, ive usually had very mental jobs where i would program industrial machines, do trouble shooting to fix them, blue print reading and the list goes on and on. i miss having things like that to do and i feel like mentally i'm slipping in ways. i'm just not as sharp as ive always been and i'm not sure what to do to stay sharp and at my best. i did bring it up to Master and he said its normal since i havent been having to use those skills and that hes not overly concerned about it and suggested maybe checking out some books at the library that are made to help keep ones mind sharp.
Has anyone else delt with this?? And how did you handle it?? |

A first analogy for this would be...
People sometimes say to me they're tired; my reaction? Go for a brisk walk then!
They spit and say they haven't got the energy and they want to rest, because all they can see is fatigue..
The fact of the matter is, a little bit of exercise (and this applies to anyone, no matter how little they're capable of, if they're ill or incapacitated or some such; exercise doesn't 'have' to be walking either - the physica aspects of CP and Hemiparesis tells me that when they're giving me bad days) gets the blood pumping, makes a person feel less sluggish, less tired (oh, the irony), and can serve in other many different ways too..
I can absolutely appreciate what you're saying jjs, given my predicament with Epilepsy and CP; they in their own right don't neccesarily cause these problems, but they along with the drugs to control the problems might do! (woah man, trippin'!)
Your M is right though, you 'do' need to keep you brain ticking over and stretch it in a way that challenges you, even though you might not find that the information you're looking at at the time is going in at the time, some of it 'may' be retained, and you could get to surprise yourself later.
The brain's odd like that.
I think the key is to keep at it, be kind to yourself when you don't get so far (I know this and had to lean about all of it because I punish myself hard for not doing so well..), and think positively even if progress or something positive is small.
I sincerely wish you the best with that given that I know how much of a bitch not having a fully functioning memory/brain can be.
Up to a point, it 'is' possible to repair some capacity with the help of diet (nutrition, not calorie-controlled), but this can only have a very limited effect and to be honest is only worth trying if you actually like the foods you need to eat for it, and aren't allergic to them; I won't try to create any false hopes there though - that wouldn't be fair.
Feel free to memo if you'd prefer,

People who retire go through this all the time. Many pick up hobbies. Perhaps building complex models (RC Airplanes maybe?) might be fun for you.

i've always been entertained by puzzle books. i currently have two books from Firefly books, 1000 Amazing Puzzle Challenge (Books 1 and 2). i do work out of the house but there are times when i cannot see my Owner (sometimes weeks at a time) and they do help to keep this mind occupied and, most importantly, out of trouble.
i also exercise at the gym and like to take walks especially with my dog.
There are some online game sites that would enable you to play against others on the internet. Playing against the computer is challenging but it's fun to have that other person connection. It's more personal.
Volunteer work may be an answer, too. It may not be as challenging as programming or reading blueprints but dealing with other people is often the most challenging thing we can do in life. Written by it with its Owner's permission. Thank you SIR.

dear jj,
I do understand your dilemna. Since you have a mechanical background full of logic and rblem solving, I suggest you take up Chess. I know this may seem trivial and even regarded as a "boring" suggestion but I assure you it is proven to evoke brain activity. It spurs cognitive thought, focus, left-right brain communication and memory capacity. I can tell you from personal experience it has helped with My "A.D.D." like symptoms. A simple suggestion. Regards,

Thank you all for your suggestions and i have chosen a subject to study in depth for right now, actually 4 different subjects yet they are related and should keep my mind going.
i also agree that nutrition and exercise play a big part and i am careful about my diet and try and exercise, i do need to exercise more but do take yoga classes and sometimes it feels like its all my body can handle. |
