In England the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu believes that St. George's Day should become a Bank Holiday.
Do you agree with this view and why? Or do you believe that England already has too many Bank Holidays.
Non UK members are more than welcome to answer.
For the benefit of those non UK members St. George is the Patron Saint of England in the same way that Saint Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland, St. Andrew the Patron Saint of Scotland, whilst Saint David, or Dewi Sant, the Patron Saint of Wales.
With the exception of St. George's Day all the rest are Bank Holidays.
Happy St. George's Day !! |

Absolutely. St.George's Day should be a bank holiday.
Its time the English stopped apologising for being English. To be a true slave is to be truly free

I'm with ya on that one; I don't 'do' British where I can..
As an example of what I'm saying; if I fill out an application form or survery for something, there's usually only a British, Foreign National or similar boxes - so I make my own, tick that, and underline; I'm ENGLISH!
One day, eh?
I know that's a slight derail from the OP, and I'm not sure there should be another holiday as such, given that the Government giveth, the Government taketh away and all that, so I'm staying neutral on that particular issue, oddly for me.

In Canada we have Canada Day to celebrate the birth of our Country. We also have some bank holidays that depend on the province you live in. Here in Alberta, we have Family Day in February and a Civic Bank Holiday in August, so if the powers that be were to decide on a St. Georges Day over in your part of the world, it could be used to celebrate being English.
It would at least make sense as a bank holiday.... unlike the Civic Bank Holiday here.

Sadly, the UK Government claims that turning St. George's Day into a Bank Holiday will be too expensive for the UK economy. What with people getting a paid Bank Holiday. |

The way I see it British is an Ethical origin group whilst English is an Ethnical origin group where you are from England in Britain. So, if you're born in England then you're obviously English and not British.
There's no such thing as failure - just life experiences from which you get stronger!!

There is nothing ethical about being British;
'We' (yeuch!) are that, because the English took over Scotland and Wales, and a small chunk of Ireland; now while 'some' people in those lands 'may' be pro-unity, a great many are most certainly not, would happily see the not so great Union Jack burn, flying their very own flags in victory once again after having gained their own governments rather than these poorer quality assemblies that they have now.
That's not even to begin the discussion on 'great' Britain colonising half the planet uninvited; it's no wonder some of the people the Queen visited in recent years want their turf back.
Btw, if, having ascertained the difference between the ethics and ethnics, I just wanna check..
Phay was born in London, and is half Bengali; is she a member of the ethNic minorities (not that you'd notice any great difference about her in truth), or, given that her mum is English, does residence play a part in her ethNicity, or is she to be considered something else?
