Remember though, rope tying is serious business, and you must pay attention to details, like cutting off blood flow, rope burns, unintended pain, etc. I would suggest you make the sessions relatively short at first, and inspect your partner closely after each one. They aren't expensive and there's plenty on ebay. Don't tie over major blood routes that pass close to the skin, for example the one around the top of the leg or the elbows, tops of knees etc. Never tie the neck (obviously) Thick rope is less likely to to harm. 10mm is comfortable, but thick rope is difficult to tie neat knots in. 6mm is more "pro" but needs to be wrapped more to prevent discomfort and injury. Learn some knots first (google "animated knots") particularly the reef knot, but learn which don't slip and tighten. Carry a little bit of string with you to practice your knots when you're bored, so you can tie decorative knots fast. Start tieing for short lengths of time and work sub up gently. A great book is "Two knoty boys - showing you the ropes" and they have a website with lots of videos too. I suggest MFP (synthetic soft, cheap and easy to find) for starters. I've used lots of different stuff and settled on this. Rainbow rope sell it in the states. Don't buy normal polypro rope, its rubbish! Use anything to hand by all means but NEVER anything less than 6mm thick and preferably 8mm or over. All rope comes in "stranded or twisted" or "braided" check the difference and see which suits you best. Many companies will send you small lengths or samples. Jute/Hemp: rough, itchy, smells nice, some subs love it. doesn't stretch. Nylon: smooth as silk, stretches, easy to find. Cotton: easy to wash, doesn't stretch, bit common!
