Just takes time but she's progressing still according to Wildheart. He said wanted to wait til more happened to post about but I thought I'd pass this along so no one worries unduly. Hope you are doing well yourself. 24 Mar 09, 9:10 AM Rolling_Wildheart 6 yrs I haven't updated in quite a while mainly because progress has been slow in coming. In fact, lately there have been a few more setbacks. On the plus side, giolla is now able to walk the length of her bed with the use of a walker. They are now going to try and hae her take steps forward (up to now it's been laterally) and try to have her sit in a wheelchair by herself. They were planning on starting that today, but a complication came up (more on that in a minute). The problem she has been having, mainly, is, due to the pain killers, she is dealing with constipation issues. This has been inhibiting her ability to breathe on her own and wean off the vent. As the respiratory therapist explained it to Me, when you have that issue, it puts stress on the diaphragm and you can't take as deep of breaths as you need to in the weaning process. Once they get this issue straightened out (and it may be as I type this as they were going to work on it tonight with enemas), she should be good to go to try to wean again. That brings Me to today's problem. giolla wanted to come off the vent this morning to drink something (she can only drink or eat when not on the vent). The therapist took her off and she had her drink. About 10-15 minutes later (still off the vent), she started to gag and lose oxygen saturation. I noticed her start to change colors, so I ran to get the therapist and she came back. giolla's oxygen saturation was at about 70% (They don't like it under 88%)and she was blue in the face. The therapist immediately put her back on the vent, but had trouble getting her saturation level to an acceptable level. It took about a half hour, but they did get her breathing right again and the saturation level back to where it should be. The respiratory therapist told Me that it was a good thing I was there. The nurses station had called, but hadn't made it sound important, so she was going to finish what she was doing and then come. She said if I hadn't been there, it could have been a much different outcome. All that said, by the evening, giolla was ok and breathing fine on the vent, albeit very anxious about the whole thing. I just thank the Powers-That-Be that I was there. Hopefully tomorrow will bring better news. I will update here tomorrow night to let everyone know how she's doing. Let's hope it's still several steps forward for every one backward! i have been so sick i almost ended up in hospital myself, with breathing problems too. i remember thinking that if something did happen to me, nobody would ever know here1 But i got through it - -perhaps because i didn't want to have the same pulmonary care physician that put Master into that horrid "cardio/pulmonary" rehab. that i - and His son, a doctor - believe was partly responsible for His death. Because if i did, i'd have to whack the doc. with the bedside telephone- blunt force trauma a la CSI (Forensics show, USA) Actually i didn't have the physical ability to do that- but i sure would have cussed him out between choking to death - asthma, pollen and vicious germs don't seem to mix. i never did go and i am grateful to the Power/S that Be that i didn't have to get that bad. Oh, and I need to correct something I posted. I didn't know it at the time, but her oxygen saturation actually dropped to 46% by the time the respiratory therapist got there. Other than that, no news. Just wanted to let everyone know she is ok after that scare.
