Type your search query there and it'll bring up the appropriate matches in the register. i believe it searches by name mostly, ie - if you search "andrews" i will come up. Of course i am also severely visually impaired so i may just have missed it - if it's still there can S/someone memo me as to what to look under to find it? OK, so now, scroll down on left til you see the underlined link for The Slave Register, click on that, then scroll down again, and there will be a white 'look up' box on the good old TSR site, for you to type names and numbers and such in.. All searches must be longer than 6 characters long. The 'box' is on the 'old' site, not here on SD!, which is where your confusion lies, I suspect. I trust this will help.
