Well, "slave" and "sadomasochism" don't really have strong associations with huge impersonal corporate or governmental bureaucracies -- and I think there are a fair number of devoted bodice-ripper-readers etc. out there in the "mainstream" who have some kind of intuitive subjective understanding of the submissive impulse (even though they have no realistic desire to live as a slave themselves), but who would be highly insulted to be personally compared to a generic interchangeable bar-code-labeled can of peas sitting on a supermarket shelf next to a whole row of identical cans of peas. It was used to keep track of the super-soldier genetic creations of a small group of military scientists called Manticore. Their tattoos were on the back of their necks and were genetically implanted so they could only be removed temporarily because they returned. Just more info on the 'Barcode culture'.
