the barcode goes mainstream teen market ... which i hardly know what to think of except to say the 'sinister' nature of the bar code here seems typical. when will they write of 'happy' bar codes.

As I've said before somewhat, the impression which many people have of barcodes is that of a tool of huge impersonal corporate or governmental bureaucracies -- something which doesn't necessarily tend towards warm and fuzzy emotional associations... Edited 30 Nov 08, 4:11 PM by AnonMoos

I've seen barcode tattoos (that are not SLRN's) around on what I will losely term the counter culture scene for quite a few years now. I remember one being referenced in Douglas Coupland's 1995 novel 'Microserfs'.
A google search offered me this site as the first hit, but there were a few listed

(I haven't looked closely but I think there are a few SLRN's on this link too). Please Do Not Feed The Trolls. It's the best way to get our board back on track.

the barcode tattoo seemed to take up quite a trend with a few young people i know after the film "Hitman" came out in november last year...
"A gun-for-hire known only as Agent 47 hired by a group known only as 'The Agency' is ensnared in a political conspiracy, which finds him pursued by both Interpol and the Russian military as he treks across Eastern Europe." ~taken from imdb.com
anyways the main actor Timothy Olyphant has his head shaved, and a barcode tattooed at the back of his head.. as a sign that he belonged to and was trained by an exclusive group of mercenaries..
some of the guys i know, thought it was "well cool" as they put it, and proceeded to get similar barcodes..
"May the wind always be at your back, and the sun always upon your face, and may the wings of destiny carry you aloft to dance with the stars." ~ unknown origin

That's a true thing, but isn't dehumanization the message of a barcode? As in meaningful to the non-feeling scanner yet undecipherable in a social context? I always thought that was why it found its way into D/s symbolism - obviously, no d/o/m has so many submissives as to need a computerized inventory but I took the idea of being (symbolically) marked as "stock" the reason for its appeal.

Yes! I think the first one that caught my attention was on Henry Rollins. He had a small part in "Heat" (DeNiro, Pacino) in 1995. I'm a big fan, but I couldn't help but laugh. "Well, Henry, that does look hot but you're probably the last person I would think of as candidate for subjugation." Haha.

ps. I know it's old hat but I kinda like the joke that goes... 'Don't get many of those to the pound, do ya?' ~~~ “I, with a deeper instinct, choose a man who compels my strength, who makes enormous demands on me, who does not doubt my courage or my toughness, who does not believe me naive or innocent, who has the courage to treat me like a woman.” - Anais Nin ~~~

Interestingly I've actually seen a couple of rather sweet barcodes that defy their de-personalised image. I know an industrial goth who dresses in the full regalia, who has his deceased Mum's birthday tattooed barcode style. It looks a perfectly blended part of his image and most people probably see it as another 'rebellious' symbol, but it is actually a rather meaningful personal tribute. I suppose that as in 'counter culture' circles, barcodes have been spotted for quite a few years they have now come full cirlce to be almost 'traditional' (in a quirky, counter culture way, but still).

The traditional answer to which of course is 'HOW DARE YOU? Do you know how offensive that is to me as a woman? I will have you know that my breasts weigh FAR more than a mere pound each'!
Works a treat at shutting up letchy men

when i have seen barcode tattoos in the past, before i discovered SD!, it didn't occur to me that the numerics might *actually* represent something. i had imagined they were arbitrary and the bar code was simply a statement about consumer culture .. where can you get a numerical line translated into an actual barcode such as the man who translated his mother's birhday?

But tell the joke, please? I've never heard it.

The
warm and fuzzy emotional associations that go with terms like "slave" and "sadomasochism"?
(The book sounds like a rip-off of Jennifer Government btw.)
