I love housekeeping. And more than that, I love reading about it. I've just been given a giftcard to buy books with and I'm now looking for more books on cleaning, organizing, cooking and baking.
I've got
* Home Comforts by Cheryl Mendelson
* House Keeping by Cindy Harris
On my current to buy list is
* Messie No More by Sandra Felton
* Speed Cleaning by Jeff Cambell.
What other books would you reccomend?
Anything from manuals, to the zen of housekeeping, to housekeeping rambles, to interior design, to cookbooks (especially ones about baking). So anything service related! |

I have a deep and abiding love for The I Hate To Housekeep Book by Peg Bracken. It's out of print but easily gotten. (If cooking is your other bete noir you can get The I Hate To Cook Book with it in the same volume.)
The author is easily the funniest and most intelligent housekeeping author I've ever read.
Krista Now I'm going to marry my first wife, then I'm going to divorce her. Now, I know what you're going to say, but stick with me, my story gets better! I'm going to marry my second wife, then I'm going to kill her! Cut her head off! Ah, you weren't expecting that, were you? Third wife, going to shoot her!

Yeah. It doesn't work for me, the system's far too slow.

Oooh. I wish I could get a hold of those. However, my money is for a Swedish bookshop that has... well, only books in print. It seems to find most in-print English titles, though.
Sometimes, housekeeping is prue blegh. It's why I'm getting "Speed Cleaning", it's about getting every move to count, which will make sure you can clean your house in about 42 minutes... or so the author says.

We have a very old Mrs Beeton book here that was Ms mother's... it even has all his special dates in the back (when he had measles and so on) and it's full of handy tips for the perfect housewife.
There are recipes, home help tips, record keeping.....
It even goes so far as to tell you to put a clean apron on for when hubbie comes home and make sure the children are quiet so he doesn't get stressed
I'm pretty sure it's still available to buy and has been re-printed over and over again.. and it does make a great book for the kitchen.
If you'd like me to I can pop downstairs at some point to find out which edition it is so you could chase it down.

Hmmm... I'll have to take a look. I believe Ms Beeton's can be found online, though.
So far, I've revised and revised the list and now it looks like this:
Campbell, Jeff: Speed Cleaning
Jones, Peggy: Sidetracked Home Executives
Morgensten, Julie: Organizing from the Inside Out
Allen, David: Getting things done
Bodoano, Bridget: Little Book of quick fixes for a spotless home
It's a wee bit over my allowance, but I'm hoping that Master might be feeling generous... after generous amounts of begging, at least.
Otherwise, I have to get the last two in Swedish, which is much cheaper. I just hate reading Sweidsh. *ugh*

"How Clean is Your House" by Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie, from the tv series (pure bliss!) and
"Is there Life After Housework?" Don Aslett, which is more about the theory behind it. |

Gosh, where to being...
The Cleaning Bible, by Kim and Aggie of 'How Clean Is Your House' fame.
How To Be The Perfect Housewife, by Anthea Turner. Also, the DVDs of series one and two are available and are simply...perfect.
I recently found a fascinating little book in a clearance sale so I'm afraid I don't know how available it is. It's called 'Green Clean: eco-friendly cleaning for the home'. It's stuffed full of natural cleaning product recipes and uses for vinegar, baking soda and the like. It's wonderful if you don't want to use a lot of chemicals in your house, or you simply want to save money.
For cookery books, I would recommend anything by Elizabeth David. You're unlikely to ever cook anything mention, but they are glorious culinary travelogues of France and the Mediterranean.
However, you can't go wrong with a Delia.
Or a Martha Stewart.
