I want to remove my old profile names and posts.

as when doing web search with google it brings up information relatiing to TSR. which because of old old profile name. which i would like removed.

even though i have changed my profile name. the old profile name is still searchable under google and it basicly now also means person searching my name is able to get to current profile.

would deleting my profile totaly, remove any traces of my profile oldest profile name from the site. thus stopping goolgle search from bring it up. which comming to light could affect my buissness.

Copied from the editing profile section of settings

"However, once a name is added, it cannot be removed - so think carefully before adding a new name."

Unfortunately it might be your best bet to start from scratch.

They should really change that sometime. It's really weird that people are stuck with their old names, unless they completely remove their profile and make a new one.

For example: what if a Master gives a girl a slave name which she uses on Slave Register. Years later her Master leaves her and she finds another Master and receives a new slave name. I would think that that doesn't change her register number, because she is still a slave as she was before. But it should be possible to change her name and delete any links to her previous Master. It's possible on driving licences so why not on Slave Register?

I think there are good reasons on the board for keeping a trace of name changes. It helps avoid the sock puppet problem for a start.

Google and the internet in general is a different problem... that of cached information. What you post in public space, and the internet is public space, will be accessible and stay so, hence the warning.

I don't think anything can be done short of asking each and every provider to delete cached memory (which I think for instance they do under police or judicial orders for children in abuse cases) but I doubt it's possible just because you're sorry you put something out there... it's an impossible burden for the companies concerned.

Perhaps Tanos might explain more or anyone else with more techie knowledge?

This is indeed the reason: it stops malicious people "laundering" their identity by hiding previous names they earned bad reputations with. For non-malicious people, that means everyone knows you're displaying the names your profile has had over the years.

If people want to hide things from others they're communicating with, at least they have to start from scratch with a new join date.

As to the comparison with motoring: it's more like a car's log book rather than than a driving license (and grinding off the chassis number so you can't tell it was in an accident.)

Whilst the web boards are searchable by Google etc and cached, the list of previous profile names is explicitly excluded from search engines. Whether they all obey that is a different matter, and no one should rely on it: it's just there to stop embarrassing connections. eg when the former "Master_Joes_slave" is now with "Dom_Bob".

Thank you both for your replies. It makes a lot more sense now.

My naive mind didn't think about the fact that there are some bad people around who can take advantage of this. I only thought of the good people around us. hehe..

Thanks for explaining.
