Yes, i love pilates. It has been wonderful for both toning and strength building without going for bulk. And it also seems to help with things like being able to stay kneeling or in rope bondage longer...i don't get cramped or uncomfortable as quickly.

I don't know if you have tried yoga, but I highly recommend it for (depending somewhat on the instructor and style) toning, strength, flexibility, and even inner calm. I know it isn't quite what you were asking about, but perhaps it could serve as an alternative if pilates doesn't work out for you. |

Pilates is some of the toughest stuff I've tried. I've done astanga yoga, but I was still exhausted after my first pilates work out.
Pilates worked really well in toning muscles and ... well, I got a general feeling of being taller. (I'm 5'5".)
Definitely worth it for me! Remember, today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

moon would chose Ashtanga yoga over Pilates any day. Pilates has a lot of gripping involved that can be challenging on any back problems. Joe Pilates http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Pilates
created the system years ago for injured dancers. It is good for core strength but i feel yoga, even Ashtanga is safer and more of an entire overall body workout compared to Pilates. imho of course.
just a little sidebar; Wiki says he died at 87, many yogis lived and live to be over 100.
