Machelle Kindle, in Her book "Manual Creation" addresses this: 1) As They approach a door, slave moves from Mistresses' side to go ahead to open the door. 2) slave holds door open for Her. 3) slave continues to hold door open if others are close behind, allowing door to close when appropriate. 4) slave rejoins Her. This sounds OK to Me. I want My slave next to Me, though, so that I can talk with it or give special Orders. My reaction to the Arab way of doing things is: If she stays five paces behind you, then WHY do you have a wife in the first place!?
